Coaltech Industries began as a sole proprietorship, focusing on trading coconut shell-based charcoal. This initial stage helped the company build a strong foundation and industry knowledge.
The company expanded its operations by setting up a charcoal granulation plant. This marked its entry into the export market and opened new growth opportunities.
Coaltech Industries became a Private Limited company, strengthening its organizational structure. During this period, it actively engaged in the trading of activated carbon.
A major milestone was achieved with the installation of the first activation kiln. The company also introduced an eco-friendly carbonization process to ensure consistent raw material quality.
Today, the company manages the complete production process from coconut shells to activated carbon. Following a factory expansion that includes a new kiln, it continues to grow as a reliable industry player.

We manufacture activated carbon from premium Sri Lankan coconut shells, producing a highly microporous structure that is ideal for removing chlorine, taste, and odour from water. Our activated carbon also offers excellent mechanical strength and low impurity levels, minimizing the risk of leaching and ensuring safe, reliable water purification.
We use premium Sri Lankan coconut shells, renowned for their exceptional hardness and uniform structure, to produce activated carbon with a hardness greater than 99% and an attrition loss of less than 3%. This superior durability minimizes carbon fines, reduces gold loss, and extends the service life of the carbon during gold recovery operations.
Yes. Depending on your application, we can chemically impregnate our activated carbon to enhance the removal of specific industrial gases and emissions. We offer a range of impregnation options, including KOH, KI, and NaOH, to meet your process requirements.
We carry out the entire conversion process from coconut shell to finished activated carbon within our own manufacturing facility. By producing our own high-quality charcoal before activation, we maintain complete control over every production stage, ensuring consistent raw materials, reliable quality, and dependable product performance.
We have eliminated fossil fuel usage from both major thermal processes in our manufacturing operation.
For kiln temperature maintenance, we do not use oil or other fossil fuels, instead relying on our renewable energy system. For steam generation used during activation, we utilize waste heat recovery boilers that capture excess heat from the kiln to produce the required steam without fossil fuels. By eliminating fossil fuels from both processes, we achieve a truly sustainable production approach.
We apply client-specific grading and processing requirements during both the activation and post-activation stages of manufacturing. This enables us to customize particle size distribution and product specifications throughout the production process, ensuring every shipment meets our customers’ exact technical requirements.
Sri Lankan coconut shells are naturally harder, denser, and more uniform than many other raw materials used for activated carbon production. These characteristics allow us to produce activated carbon with a highly developed microporous structure, excellent adsorption capacity, and superior mechanical strength for demanding industrial applications.
We source our primary raw material—coconut shells—from well-established local industries, including desiccated coconut and virgin coconut oil production. This sustainable supply chain provides us with a consistent and reliable source of high-quality raw materials, enabling us to maintain our production capacity of approximately 60 metric tons per month.
We continuously invest in research and development to enhance the performance of activated carbon for emerging applications, including advanced energy storage technologies. Our ongoing work focuses on developing high-performance activated carbon with extremely high surface area and exceptional purity to support future value-added applications. (Details of our research collaborations will be shared once the necessary approvals have been obtained.)
We began as a trading business in 1986 before expanding into exports with the establishment of our granulation plant in 2000. In 2010, we commissioned our first activation kiln, marking our transition into a fully integrated activated carbon manufacturer with complete control over the entire production process.
